About
The Cassette Vision was an early cartridge-based home video game console released by Epoch in Japan in 1981.
Before the arrival of Nintendo's Family Computer (NES in North America), it became one of the popular home video game systems in Japan and holds a unique place in the country's early video game history.
On a sudden whim, I decided to port Battle Vader, a Cassette Vision game I used to play many years ago, to the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis.
It's a very simple game, but I hope this port gives you a chance to experience a little piece of classic Japanese video game history.
The Game
Battle Vader is a simple shooting game in the style of Space Invaders.
Due to the hardware limitations of home video game consoles at the time, only a single row of invaders is visible on the screen.
But what you see isn't everything.
Behind the visible enemies are more "invisible invaders" waiting for their turn.
Destroy an invader, and the next one waiting behind it will appear. Keep shooting your way through the enemy ranks until you've destroyed them all.
Once all the invaders have been defeated, their mothership—a UFO—will swoop down from above and attack.
Shoot down the UFO to clear the stage.
As you progress through the stages, the invaders begin one row lower each time, bringing them closer and closer to your ship.
How long can you survive?
Controls
D-Pad: Move left and right.
A / B / C Buttons: Fire.
START Button: Start the game.
How to Play
To play on a real Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, transfer the ROM file to a compatible flash cartridge.
If you don't own the original hardware, you can also play the game using a Mega Drive / Genesis emulator.
