Recently, during an exploration on the Romhacking.net website, a tool called ISSDitor, developed by ApioMan, was identified. This software allows for the easy editing of the teams present in the game International Superstar Soccer Deluxe (ISSD).Following this discovery, it was decided to use the tool to adapt ISSD to the context of the 1994 World Cup. The game in question includes 22 of the 24 teams that participated in the tournament, excluding Bolivia and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the game features several teams that did not qualify for the World Cup but were involved in the qualifiers held in 1993.The first stage of the process consisted of editing all the teams that participated in the World Cup, replacing the players’ last names with their real names, respecting, whenever possible, the jersey number and position of each athlete. For the teams that only competed in the qualifiers, the lineups were based on the 1993 call-ups, without considering the jersey numbers, which varied throughout the qualifying matches.A significant limitation of the game is the restriction of names to a maximum of 8 characters, resulting in many truncated names. Additionally, the game allows only 20 players per team (11 starters and 9 substitutes), which implies the exclusion of two players from the original lineups. Another technical restriction is the inability to assign jersey numbers higher than 20, which can cause errors in the game. To work around this issue, adjustments were made, such as redistributing jersey numbers to keep the starters with numbers above 20.Obtaining the lineups of the teams that only participated in the qualifiers proved to be a considerable challenge. In some cases, such as the Turkish team, it was not possible to find the exact lineup. To overcome this difficulty, artificial intelligence (AI) was used to estimate which players would be the most likely from that era.Initially, the possibility of adjusting the players’ skills to more accurately reflect the reality of the time was considered. However, this task proved unfeasible due to the lack of sufficient statistical data for a precise evaluation. Using AI to estimate these ratings yielded unsatisfactory results, with many players having identical skills, which does not reflect the diversity and particularities of each athlete.In the future, there is a possibility of adjusting the players’ appearance and team uniforms. However, at present, there is no available time to implement these changes.Although there are similar projects aimed at the Super Nintendo, it was decided to seek data directly from sources such as Transfermarkt (https://www.transfermarkt.com.br/weltmeisterschaft-1994/gesamtspielplan/pokalwettbewerb/WM94/saison_id/1993).
