The original arcade hit SPLATTERHOUSE is coming soon to the Sega Megadrive/Genesis!MEGA SPLATTERHOUSE™ DEMOThe player controls Rick, a parapsychology student who was murdered by undead monsters on a visit to the West Mansion (Splatterhouse). Resurrected by the "Terror Mask," Rick must kill his way through an army of ghouls and demons in order to rescue his girlfriend. The place was called the West Mansion. But, to all who knew its legend, it was known as "Splatterhouse." It was once the home of the famed parapsychologist, Dr. West. There was a research lab in the house where Dr. West conducted some of his most gruesome experiments. It was even said that it was in this house that he created the most hideous creatures that ever walked the face of the Earth. But no one knew for sure. Dr. West had not been seen or heard from in years, and no one who has ever gone into the mansion has lived to tell the tale. Rick and his girlfriend, Jennifer, were parapsychology majors at the local university. They were both very interested in the works of Dr. West as he was the most famed parapsychologist in the world. One day, they decided to visit the abandoned West Mansion as part of a project they were working on in school. As they walked towards the house, it started to rain. They entered. All went dark. Lightning cracked through the sky. There was a frantic scuffle. Then, a scream. And suddenly Jennifer was gone. Rick's unconscious body was covered with blood. Hours later, Rick awoke to a fantastic horror-He was alone and drenched with blood. But, the most terrifying thing of all was that a hideous mask covered his face. He had read tales of this "Terror Mask" in Dr. West's writings-it was said to have ancient spiritual powers. As his only hope, Rick must depend on this mask to give him the strength and courage to find Jennifer.Notes from the Developer:This is a fan port of Splatterhouse I've been working on to learn the ropes of Sega Megadrive/Genesis development. This game will be made free to play on release. For now please enjoy the demo. Please note that this is a WORK IN PROGRESS and that what is in this demo is not necessarily the final versions of art, color, sound or music. There may be bugs as well. They will be fixed.  There is tuning to be done - it will be done. We will not be adding red blood to the game, we will not be adding the cutting room floor sprites/objects/enemies that were not in the final game. We will make adjustments to some things to make it look better with the genesis color palette and will do a few things to show off the genesis abilities over the original game (parallax scrolling etc). To play the demo: download the binary ROM file to use with an emulator of your choice. We recommend BlastEm.BlastEm for WindowsBlastEm for 64-bit LinuxBlastEm for 32-bit LinuxIf you have a SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive and an EverDrive or compatible device, all you need to do is copy the binary file to an SD card to play with the demo.Players: 1Levels: 2PERIPHERALS: Sega Control Pad™ or Control Stick™This version of the game is made for 60hz NTSC systems. While it will work on pal systems, the screen size and timing will be off. I'll look into fixing this later down the road.CREDITSLead Development, New GFX, MAME GFX Rips, Touch ups & SFX Rips: DMM069Music & Additional SFX: CyberdeousColor treatments and Color/Art Consulting: PyronScorpion Engine and SE Consulting: EarokSE Consulting and Hand Holding: Master LinkueiConsulting for all things Splatterhouse: Dire51QA: All of the above!"Splatterhouse" is a trademark and/or copyright of Bandai Namco Holdings Inc. It's been over two years now since we last gave an update on Mega Splatterhouse, the fanmade Mega Drive / Genesis port of Namco's horror-themed arcade beat 'em up Splatterhouse, but it appears its developer, Monster Bath Games, has just issued an exciting update on the eagerly awaited project.

Writing on social media, the developer of the unofficial project has issued a statement saying that as of this week, the fan game will officially be "feature complete," with the developer having just two remaining levels to finish off.

As they state, the "next round" of tasks after that will be "clean up and tweaking," which essentially means changing some of the palettes and making sure the music and SFX are implemented and everything is as "close to perfect" as possible. Then, they say, they need to figure out how to release it.

Mega Splatterhouse will be feature complete this week. I'm finishing Level 5 today, then only level 6 left after that.

Next round is clean up and tweaking. Change some palettes, make sure the music and SFX are all in and Enemy AI is as close to perfect as I can get it.

Then I…— Monster Bath Games (@realMonsterBath) September 29, 2026

This is where things get slightly interesting. In the past, Monster Bath Games previously released a Halloween demo of Mega Splatterhouse as a free fan project, but it seems they have slightly higher hopes for the finished version, wanting to reach out to the respective rights holders (in this case, Namco) or their partners to enable them to do "a legal release of the game with the little extras."

"I’ll contact a few people," they wrote on Twitter/X. "I’m very serious about doing this the legal way. I don’t care about the money, I care about it being handled properly."

One motivation they gave for wanting to turn the project into an official project is to avoid a scenario where they release the game for free, only to see people inevitably steal their work and try to profit off it on AliExpress.

As they put it, "Ending up on AliExpress after all the work I've put into this port would fucking suck."

Honestly, we'd love to see this happen, but we're unsure of the likelihood of Namco agreeing to something like this, given the lack of precedent.

Hopefully, as was apparently the case for h0ffman's Zero Wing Neo Geo port, there will be someone reading this, though, who will be able to potentially point Monster Bath Games in the right direction and help them realise their dream.
