This is a hack of Sonic 3 & Knuckles for Genesis/Mega Drive that lets you swap between Sonic and Knuckles in the middle of a level, even in mid-air, and transform into Super at any moment, for free.
The buttons are split so each one does exactly one thing:
A: jump B: in the air, transform into Super. Press it again in the air to drop back to normal C: swap character. Sonic becomes Knuckles, Knuckles becomes Sonic Start: pause, as in the original
Known gaps:
Tails can’t be introduced as a swap without major game reprogramming
The lives icon keeps the character you started the act with, but it shares the player’s palette, so it takes on the new character’s colours. Sonic looks cool in red though
If you are Knuckles in the cutscenes with Knuckles (Mushroom Hill act 1, Lava Reef act 2), you meet yourself (see screenshot)
