Following the release of X-Men 2: Clone Wars (1995), production began on a third X-Men game for the Genesis, which was set to feature female team members Storm, Jean Grey and Rogue as playable characters. While featured in magazine coverage, the game was ultimately cancelled in 1996. According to former Sega producer John Pedigo, who retains a non-working prototype of the game, the cancellation resulted from developer Clockwork Tortoise failing to reach development milestones on schedule, combined with Sega's decision to move away from Genesis game production by that time.[311][312][313][314]
